I started writing this when you were nine, and I'm finishing it on a quiet Sunday in May 2026. By the time you read it, you'll be eighteen, and I'm imagining you in a coffee shop somewhere with a notebook in front of you and the unbearable certainty of someone who is about to leave home.

There are three things I want you to know.

The first is that the world is going to ask you, often and in disguise, who you are. The honest answer is that you are still figuring it out, and that the figuring out will take much longer than anyone tells you. That's not a failure. That's the work.

The second is that you are allowed to be tired. The thing you've inherited from me — the wanting-to-do-everything, the worry, the ambition that hums even when you sleep — it's a gift only if you let it rest. If you don't, it eats you. Rest is not weakness. Rest is craft.

The third is the easy one. You don't have to be okay for me. You don't have to perform okayness for anyone. The people who matter will let you be sad. The people who don't, I trust you to leave behind.

I love you. I always did, from the first second.
